Adapting Book

A film maker would have trouble adapting The Help into a movie because it is told from many different points of views. In a book it is easy to change points of views and still understand what is happening but in a movie it would be hard to flow from one person to the next and have everything still make sense. I think in the movie it would have to be told from only one or two points of view.

Three scenes I think are important to keep would be when Abilene is making food for Miss Leefolt and her friends and over hears them talking about the help needing their own separate bathroom so they do not have to use the same one as them . When Minnie gets fired from Miss Hilly’s house is also an important scene. Miss Hilly says that Minnie stole her silver and told everyone else. No one would hire Minnie after that even though she didn’t really steel the silver. The last important scene is when Miss Celia has Minnie come over to her house for a job interview. Miss Celia has a very large house and is in the middle of the cotton fields. No one she had interviewed wanted to clean it so when she was done showing Minnie around she assumed she didn’t want the job. Minnie said she would take it though so now she has a job and it is paying more than her last.

The first part of the book I would cut out is when Miss Hilly puts her mom in a nursing home. It is kind of important but is in not necessary not keep the plot moving and the movie would not be missing anything big without it. The second part of the book I would cut out is when Abilene is in the baby’s room in the beginning of the book. Nothing is happening in this scene. She is just talking about the baby and the house. It is one of the slowest parts of the book and the movie does not need it nor does the movie need it to stay close to the book. I have not seen this movie yet but I heard it is really good and stays close to the book.

My idea is a Hunger Games themed shop. Where people would be able to buy costumes from any district they like or the capitol. “For the opening ceremonies, you’re supposed to wear something that suggests your district’s principal industry. District 11, agriculture. District 4, fishing. District 3, factories. This means that coming from district 12, Peeta and I will be in some kind of coal miner’s getup.”Pg.66. There are different “looks” from each of the districts pertaining to what they produce. Just like in the book when they get dresses accordingly to their personal district. They can also get their hair and makeup done to go along. Especially if they want to look like capitol people because they have extreme fashion and colorful hair and makeup. “They do surgery in the Capitol, to make people appear younger and thinner. In District 12, looking old is something of an achievement since so many people die early. You see an elder person, you want to congratulate them on their longevity, ask the secret of survival.” (9.74) When they are all finished they can take a train ride that would be like the tributes going to the opening ceremonies and would see people (not real) screaming their district name as if they were really a part of the opening ceremonies. This would give fans of the book the best possible experience they could ever have relating to the book because it would be so real and give them an even stronger connection to the book.

This idea comes from the costumes the tributes wear when going to the opening ceremonies. ‘“Katniss, the girl who was on fire,” says Cinna and gives me a hug.” (8.36-8.40). Kids love to dress up so why would they not love this? For the opening ceremonies each tribute has their own stylist and gets dressed up to represent what product their district produces. For example district 12 produces coal so they are usually dresses as coal miners or something relating to coal. This shop would not be just for kids though. Many adults and teens are the ones who actually have read the books so they are welcome to get dresses up as well. This is a fun way they could show their spirit towards the book.

I think this idea will work because this book is very popular and it drawls in many different age groups. Adults and teens both have read it and fell in love. People would love to get dressed up as their favorite district and feel what it were like to be them. They could also dress as their favorite character at a point in their journey of the book. For example if someone’s favorite character is katniss they could dress as her in the woods hunting, at the reaping, during the games, during the interview, at opening ceremonies ext. Men could dress as Cesar, Gale, Peeta, any of the district boys, Haymitch, even president snow. This will help broaden the audience of the book because if people go to The Hunger Games shop that haven’t read the book then after seeing what the characters are like and getting to dress up like them they would want to read it. This will net the book attention because it would be a good place to go to have fun with your family so people would want to come to have a good time not just to act like their favorite character. My idea will encourage people to stay connected to the author because by going to the shop it will remind the reader how much they love the book and the author

                                                                                                                                                 

What is a book?

A book is a book. I do not think it matters how you read. I personally like to read a physical book because I like to see myself progress through the book. I have a kindle but I do not like to read because you only get to touch a button and not get to flip a page. I think the ipad has the best virtual way to read a book because you get to do the motion of turning a page and you see it “turn”. I think that physical books should still be produced because there are a lot of people who don’t like the kindle or nook and people should be able to choose which one they read off of. However I feel that kids’ books should be paper and not virtual. They should have the experience of reading from books so they can make a decision later if they like those types of books or if they want to read off of a kindle. I think that the nooks, kindles, and ipads are a great idea. If there is someone that has an ipad already than I think it would be practical for them to get books on it or even the newspaper. People have accepted newspapers and articles read on computers and ipads so why should a book be any different? Newspaper companies are still doing fine so I don’t think that authors have anything to worry about. People still buy magazines and newspapers because they like physically having it even though they could easily get on the internet and read the exact same one.     

Why I Read

I read because it is a way to get away. I like the ability you have to read about what you want and how you want your life to go where as in real life, you can’t change what is happening. If you want to laugh and be happy you can read a funny book and it will make you feel happy. I like that in books it’s up to you what the characters look like and their voices but in movies or TV shows you don't get to come up with that. They look one way or talk another and you just get to watch them but if you’re reading about the characters you can imagine them. In romances i think it is better to read them because in a movie you might not think that the main character is who you would want to see and imagine your Mr. Right looking or acting like. In a book though you can picture them however you want so you can love the book that much more than if you were to see the movie. When I read it makes me feel good because I’m using my mind and not sitting around doing nothing. I would rather read a physical book than say a nook because i love the feeling of flipping a page and seeing myself progress further and further along. When I finish a book I feel so good and I want to read more. Reading is addictive but in a very good way. When I find a book I like I can get lost in it for days. Finding a good book that I truly enjoy is one of the best feelings. When it is over though, a little piece of myself dies a little inside.
